What Is LSI?

The world of search engines does not rely on backlink analysis only. There are a lot of factors involved such as On-page SEO (page content), backlinks, trust (at domain level), social factors (social metrics), internal domain trust (inter-page linking), and domain branding. To start your On-page strategy, it is best to know first what LSI means.

LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing is one of most misunderstood terms in internet marketing yet has such simple explanation. A simple principle about it is to discover words and phrases that you can use to write your page such that it seems to be relevant to Google (search engines). You can avoid overusing the main keyword by incorporating the related LSI keywords that also contain the main keyword. The better you write the content, the more relevant the page appears to Google, the more enhanced your on-page SEO score will be and that’s extremely rewarding and helps your website be found in search engines.

Uses for LSI Keywords
LSI keywords can be used for the following;

  • Supporting keywords in the content on a page. They should be used liberally within the content of the main page that you are trying to rank for the main keyword.
  • Supporting content. Additional content can be written to target these LSI keywords to build optimised pages which link back to the main page that you are trying to rank.
  • Link building. As we need to vary the anchor text to the site or page that we are trying to rank for the main keyword we can use the LSI keywords as alternative anchor text since they are still considered highly relevant to Google.

Step-By-Step Guide In Identifying LSI Keywords

1. Use the Google Keyword Tool to find the LSI keyword based on your main keyword. Go to Google keyword tool https://adwords.google.com.au/select/KeywordToolExternal
2. Select the correct country for the project, enter the main keyword and fill in the captcha details and hit enter. Double check that you’ve selected the correct country for the project – this is very important.
3. Enter your main keyword
4. Ensure that the Match Type is set to “phrase”
5. Fill in the captcha details and press “Get Keyword Ideas”
6. Keywords are automatically sorted by relevance

Do a final review of the keywords to make sure that they are all relevant to the main keyword. When doing this for keywords such as “labour” Google will return relevant keywords such as “Workforce, industrial pay, wages, child labour, birth, pregnancy, etc.”

If the article you are writing on “Labour” is actually referring to the process of giving birth to a baby then “Workforce, industrial pay & wages” are totally irrelevant. The presence of LSI keywords in content should only be about 2 percent to 5 percent density. More than 5 percent is a big mistake and can adversely affect SEO.
