Is More Always Better?

Just a quick blog post for you today, however its one that is greatly important especially in regard to the SMBSEO philosophy and the way we approach all client projects. I’d like to quickly discuss a principle know as Occam’s Razor which states:

“It is futile to do with more things that which can be done with fewer”

A modern day interpretation is echoed in footy teams around Australia.

KISS… Keep It Simple Stupid… harsh but very often true.

You see, because of the quick growth of the internet and companies rushing to establish an online presence, the internet has become overcrowded with websites full of useless content and tons of pointless overloading of information. I believe that this is because most companies think they have only milliseconds to convey all of their branding or marketing messages and for some reason they think the way to do it is by stuffing every pixel on the site with what they consider “valuable” or “must know information” for visitors.

All this has done really is create confusion for site visitors and produced the same results these companies are trying so hard to avoid, a complete misunderstanding of their message (or no understanding of it at all) because visitors are unable to decipher the important bits from the information overload.

Everywhere people go (both online and offline) they are bombarded with marketing messages and branding being jammed down their throat. That’s why we believe in William of Occam’s principle and our interpretation of it which is “less is always better.” We believe that if any idea, concept or message cannot be conveyed in one sentence, then its overly complicated.

The concept of this principle goes far beyond a website or a companies online presence, it’s a principle that should really be applied in all areas of a business.

So, the question I want you to ask yourself is, can you sum up in one sentence (or even better, one word) what you think of this concept and how it can be applied in your business?
